SEPHARDIC TEMPLE-TIFERETH ISRAEL

Established as non-profit religious and charitable organization under the name of « La Communidad de Los Angeles, » some eighty years ago, the Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel is a congregation which seeks to perpetuate and to transmit to posterity the historic culture and religious rites of the Sephardic branch of the Jewish faith.

The Sephardic experience in America began in 1654 with the arrival in New Amsterdam of twenty-three Sephardic Jewish refugees from Pernambuco. The congregation they founded is the third oldest religious corporation in the United States. Among the famed Sepharadic patriots of the Revolutionary days were the financier Haym Solomon, the merchant Aaron Lopez, Major Benjamin Nunes, Rabbi Gershom Mendes Seixas and Judah Touro. Isaac Minis was the first white child born in Georgia. Florida's first Senator was David Levy Yulee ; and Supreme Court Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo proved to be one of the greatest jurists in the history of that august body.

The member families of the Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel originate from Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, North Africa, the Near East and Cuba and are bound together by their common Sephardic heritage.

The estimated Sephardic population in the United States is 150.000 with 10.000 Sephardim in Southern California.
